To answer the question of who he should be paired with, it pretty much has to be either Sam or EB at this point. Putting Thad and Speights on the back line together is defensive suicide.

Agreed. Although Sam or EB could be a decent debate, given Speights deficiencies.

I'm hopeful that with more playing time his defense will improve. He has all the physical tools to be an adequate defender (but so do all those other players you compared him to) so hopefully it's just a matter of being comfortable out there. It's hard to evaluate D and expect improvement with EJ as our coach though.
Speights or Brand should be starting. I don't really care as long as both get their minutes, but if they want to win a few games it's probably a good idea to have one of your two best bigs starting. When Speights is on the court he should be the focal point on O. He's so efficient and can score from anywhere, can't say that about anyone else on the team. Hopefully with more PT and touches he'll look for teammates more and improve in that area. You should write a "Basketball Stats for Dummies" guide for us.. well, dummies. Comment (1)
I actually meant to put a short explanation of each of the advanced stats. I generally dislike throwing terms out there without an explanation, expecting everyone to have used the same cryptic abbreviations.

Well after the team trades away Brand and Iguodala it will be all Speights... and he'll average 23ppg
But in all seriousness- he needs to start. Once he is back fully healthy no reason not to play him as much as possible. Not sure if he can match those 36mpg projections- but also not sure he will always be a bad defender or passer. I actually think he could become a good passer and rebounder- but he'll always be a lazy defender. Comment (1)
That's why the coach is key. Give me a defensive taskmaster that would demand better performance from him and force him to realize that his ability to rain buckets is not the end-all, be-all
